Liu Xi looked intently at Hatman, awaiting his answer. After a few moments of silence she bowed her head, averting her gaze. She had put herself entirely out there, lowering the emotional walls she had learned to surround herself with, and had been rejected.

But then she felt a soft touch on her chin, as a gentle hand lifted her head to look into his eyes. Words weren’t necessary as his gaze locked with hers, a passion blazing. Silently he lifted her into his arms and she snuggled her head into his chest, wrapping her arms around his neck.

Hatman took a few steps forward, and Liu Xi knew what to do. The garden gave way to her bedroom, spacious and tidy. He set her down on the bed, his gaze still locked onto hers. She reached up and removed his chef hat, tossing it across the room.

“You have hat hair,” she whispered.

“It’s my Kryptonite,” he whispered back.

She giggled at the joke, and it was then that he kissed her. It was short and urgent, communicating how badly he needed her. As he pulled away, he asked, “Are you alright?”

“I’m more than alright,” she smiled. “You are very considerate.”

“Well, I am Canadian,” he grinned before giving her a light peck on the nose.

It was then that she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him back down into another kiss, this one much longer. She was almost reluctant to break it, but it was the only way to remove his shirt.

“Oh Hatty, I need your Canadian bacon!” she gasped.

Yuki swatted CSFB! upside the head as she walked past. “Oh grow up, would you?”

“What? That’s what I heard happened!” he called after her.

"Be honest with me like you always do, Jay. We are both very friendly. We each have one...difficulty...we can help each other with. Would you think about taking a chance and make love with me just once?"

Hatman swallowed hard, trying to think of an appropriate reply. But then he remembered...after that entire discussion they had, he at least owed her the honesty she expected. He took a deep breath, and gave her an answer.

“No,” he said, trying his best to not make it sound harsh.

“I see,” she said quietly, bowing her head so her hair hid her face.

“No, I don’t think you do,” he said, brushing her hair away from her face and tucking it behind her ear. “I take something like this very seriously, Liu Xi. I’m not saying I’m not flattered, I am. But I’m committed to Zdenka.”

He could see she was still upset, so he continued. “Sex for me is more than just physical pleasure. It’s an intimate connection with someone I care deeply for.” He thought about that last statement for a moment. “Not to say I don’t care for you, of course…” he began to backpedal.

“It’s alright” she said softly, “I know what you mean.” She paused and considered what he had said. “What about Chiaki?”

Hatman sighed. He knew this part was coming. “That’s a fair question. I guess my…experience with Chiaki showed me just what I’m saying, that sex should be about more than just two people getting friendly with each other. It was my wake up call, I suppose. I didn’t know Chiaki well enough to progress to that stage so rapidly, and ultimately that’s probably why things didn’t work out.

“You’re looking to have an experience with someone, a sexual experience, to try and wipe out the memories of a bad experience. I’m not saying I condone that, but I understand what you’re trying to do. But it can’t be with me. You’re looking for a meaningful experience. Without that connection I mentioned, there wouldn’t be that meaning you’re looking for.”

“I appreciate your honesty,” she said after considering his words. “I think you and I have differing opinions on the subject, but as you respect my view I will respect yours. I trust we can still be friends?”
“Of course!” he assured her, giving her a quick hug. “You know, I once used a sleeping cap to help Hallie battle her nightmares. Maybe I can do the same for you?”

Liu Xi smiled. “No, that is alright. Chiaki has been teaching me how to rely upon myself first and foremost, using my own inner strength, and I would be a poor student if I were to break away from that so quickly.”

“There’s nothing wrong with counting on your friends to help you,” countered Hatman.

“No, but when the chips are down sometimes your friends cannot be there. It is important to know what you are capable of in such a situation,” she replied.

“Okay, but if the nightmares won’t go away, you just have to ask.” Hatman got to his feet and pulled Liu Xi up as well. “Now how about we get back to the barbeque?” He removed his chef hat and placed it on Liu Xi’s head. “How about you grill for awhile? We’re probably short of hamburgers by now.”

“Alright,” she agreed. “Though I think something’s been missing from the hamburgers so far.”

“Oh yeah? What?”

“I need your Canadian bacon.”
